The Wassily Chair by Marcel Breuer
Chair £343 [CH3002A]
Marcel Lajos Breuer was born in Pécs, Hungary in 1902, and became one of the greatest architects and furniture designers of the 20th century – he considered all of his designs to be absolutely essential for modern living, much as they are today.
Breuer was inspired by the shape and form of bicycle handlebars when he created the Wassily Chair No B3, in 1925 – one of his most famous pieces. He designed and created it for the quarters of famous artist Wassily Kandinsky, at the Dessau Bauhaus. The frame of the chair was made from polished, bent, nickelled tubular steel, which later became chrome plated. Breuer believed tubular steel to be affordable, hygienic and able to provide comfort without the need for springs to be introduced – quite revolutionary in it’s time.
